Railyard GFC 0-9 | Conahy Shamrocks 0-7

No

Conahy Shamrocks will look back on their two-point loss to Railyard in the 2019 Kilkenny Senior Football Championship Semi-Final with much regret. The game was played in Muckalee on Wed. 10th July.

The winners started well scoring two points, from play and a free, inside the opening four minutes. Conahy responded well to those scores and in the seventh minute James Bergin pointed a free after Gary Dunne had been fouled. Three minutes later Paddy Mullan tied the game from a free after Bill Murphy had been fouled.

Despite constant pressure from Conahy over the following ten minutes, the Railyard goalie was rarely troubled and around the twentieth minute mark Conahy missed a goal and a point which would have better reflected their superiority at that stage of the game. They did finish the half well with points from Tom Phelan (free), Bill Murphy and Gary Dunne to lead 0-5 to 0-2 at the interval.

The Railyard did have some scoring opportunities in the opening half but excellent Conahy defending kept their goal intact.

Conahy started the second half well with a sixth minute point from Tom Phelan after he was set up by Gary Dunne. They were not to score again for twenty-five minutes as Railyard thundered into the game.

The winners scored seven points without reply as they enjoyed the bulk of the possession. Conahy, although visibly tiring as the second half progressed, still had scoring chances, especially an excellent goal-scoring opportunity which went wide.

A late point from Bill Murphy left two points between the sides, but the clock was against Conahy.

Conahy's fade-out in the second half was puzzling given their first half dominance and the pace at which the team moved the ball from defence to attack. Railyard improved immeasurably in the second half with a number of their players outstanding.

Over the hour Conahy had two clear goal-scoring chances which would most likely have given a different result. The winners, once they got going in the second half, played very well and were deserving victors at the finish.

Railyard will now meet Mullinavat in the 20919 Kilkenny Senior Football Final.
